KL Going is the award winning author of books for children and teens. Her first novel, Fat Kid Rules the World was named a Michael Printz honor book by the American Library Association, as well as one of the Best Books for Young Adults from the past decade. KL began her career working at one of the oldest literary agencies in New York City. She has also written short stories for several anthologies and currently has two picture books under contract for future release. Review:
This is a moving story about how violent
crimes impact all the people involved, from the victim to the family of the
perpetrator. I worked for Child
Protective Services and I saw many children who had one or both parents in
jail. It is hard for the child because
all they really know is that their parent is gone. Some of these children never see the parent. Others have to visit the jail to see their
parents. No matter who the victim is,
and yes the people left behind when a parent goes to jail are also victims, it
is hard to deal with.
Unfortunately these children often do not
have the same support that the victim of the crime does. This story was a good look at how violence
impacts those who didn’t even know about it or are another innocent. It is also a book about growing up. And how the truth might hurt, but not nearly
as bad as secrets. (I’m not advocating
exposing children to violence, but sometimes they need to hear the truth.)
I give this book 4 out of 5 clouds.
